New East London Embroiderers Showcase at Knitting & Stitching Show

Posted by on Oct 15, 2012 in Blog, FAD Workshops, Showcases | No Comments

In the first our blog posts from the Knitting & Stitching show FAD are proud to unveil the six finished garments, hand embroidered by sixty young people from schools, colleges and community groups across East London.

It’s been quite a weekend for the NELE at Alexandra Palace. Over four days fifty thousand people attended the Knitting & Stitching show with many stopping to admire the stunning handiwork of our young embroiderers.

It was fantastic to be given this platform by Twisted Thread, and to be able to share the hard work of the young people involved with the wider community. There was some amazing feedback from visitors, with many pleased to see The Heritage Lottery Fund supporting young people to learn about their heritage in such a hands-on way.

As well as manning the  stand the NELE volunteers were on hand over the weekend to give free stitching tutorials to visitors. Using the same heritage techniques which have been applied to the garments, they mentored young people of all ages from 6 – 26 years old to create mini embroideries for our 3D paper dress gallery.

If you were at the show and would like to share your thoughts on the New East London Embroiderers project please tweet us @fadcharity. Alternatively  join our fan page on facebook to leave a comment.

A huge thank you to Twisted Thread, Lisa Friedl and to our NELE volunteers for making this showcase possible. Look out for more posts from the Knitting & Stitching show coming soon!
